Weekly Word Inspiration: Learn Something New

Sometimes we got suck in the virtual world that we have not realized that we already spent an hour or two (or more!) just scrolling, looking, reading, stalking profiles of people we don’t normally socialize with personally.

Precious time wasted, for sure. So what to do with extra or idle time? LEARN SOMETHING NEW.

Below are a few suggestions on what to learn. No, don’t just rely on online video tutorials, because your goal is to spend less time going online.

1. Read books. Be it romance, autobiography, fiction, business, self-help and recipe books, read. You will always learn something new when you read.

2. Learn to Swim, which is perfect, for summer is just around the corner.

3. Learn to Play Musical Instruments. Don’t go for classical music ensemble because you will be disappointed. There are those who have been taking up guitar lessons for years but still sound amateurish, so opt for simpler musical skills first. You would know when you are ready to go do more difficult musical pieces. If it doesn’t work out…

4. Learn to Dance. Dancing is fun and it will help make you fit. Dancing will also make you feel happy tired, which is a wonderful thing.

5. If movement is not your thing, Learn to Do Crafts. You don’t need to buy expensive art materials because you can use scrap materials to build from scratch. You may need a little help online but better use your imagination more to create original work.

6. If you feel you can’t build from scratch with crafts, try to Learn Origami. The art of Japanese paper folding, this will test your patience and perseverance. You can also spend some online time doing this craft. Or to lessen that, use books with instructional materials.

7. Learn Journalling. Making journals will help you focus as well as ruminate on the things that matter most to you as you put together bits and pieces of your life. You can incorporate the crafts you have learned in this journal making.

8. Learn Photography. If you can’t part with your smartphone as it has become an extension of your arm, then learn maximizing the camera capabilities of your unit. Read manuals, watch how-to videos, experiment and learn to edit to be able to come up with your own (mobile) photography style.

9. Learn to Draw. Drawing is one of the easier things to learn but if you are not really artistically gifted, patience and practice, lots and lots of it, will help you be able to draw something that you can be proud of.

10. Learn Scrapbooking. If you don’t want to buy the materials, you can try online scrapbooking. But this is a way for you to hone up the skills from crafting, Origami, journalling, and drawing so it would be best to do an offline scrapbooking project.

There are still so many new things to learn and here are a few more suggestions:

  • Learn to Cook
  • Learn to Sew
  • Learn to Grow a Garden
  • Learn to do Needlepoint
  • Learn to Sing

I am sure there is something out there that is specifically made for you, your preferences and your abilities. You won’t be able to know what it is unless you try to find what it is that’s especially matched for you.
