There is nothing more wonderful than to smell something that is naturally scented, like mint leaves. Mint leaves from my long-gone potted mint plant. These didn’t survive the super hot harsh summer heat we had, sigh. And there were two other pots with healthy looking mint plants that didn’t survive too.

mint

Mint leaves smell good and taste great too. Mint leaves help in digestion, treating colds and hiccups.

Mint leaves can also be used for skin care. The web offers countless natural and beauty tips using mint leaves. I hope to get new plants to be able to make these natural beauty concoctions to help my skin be in “mint” condition :D

Am home for third day in a row because our Bunso, our youngest daughter had low-grade fever for two days. She didn’t have any since last night but we still decided she stay home and rest to avoid having a relapse.

What is fever? Fever is a regulated rise in body temperature maintained by the hypothalamus in response to a pyrogen. It is a sign of an increase in the body’s thermoregulatory set point. This means the body temp is higher than the normal 37.8C.

The average body temperature is anything between 36.4C and 37.2C. The standard instrument for measuring body temperature is the clinical glass mercury thermometer.

There are different ways to see if a child has fever. For those children whose age range from birth to 2 years old, rectal checkĀ  (2 mins max and inserted at 5 cm) is more accurate for checking the core temperature and should be the first choice to check for change in temperature. Armpit check ( 4 mins) comes in second.

For children 2-5 years old, first choice for checking change in body temperature would be a rectal test, followed by ear and/or armpit.

For children over 5 years, first choice would be oral check followed by ear and armpit.

Why do we treat fever?

  • minimize discomfort and allay their fear
  • treatment is beneficial for those with high-risk conditions like metabolic disorder, febrile seizures, chronic pulmonary disorders, among others

My daughter who had low-grade fever took Dolan Ibuprofen PF instead of the usual Biogesic paracetamol which I gave the son when he got low-grade fever two weeks ago.

I learned from a recent visit to Amherst Unilab laboratories that Ibuprofen is more effective than paracetamol because it lowers the fever in a shorter time than paracetamol. It also takes a longer time between taking the next dosage.

And these I have observed when I compared the two conditions of the children.

How did our bunso fair during these two days?

During the first day my youngest child got the fever, she insisted I write the excuse letter so she can give it to her teacher when she goes to school the next day.She even wanted me to write it in a fancy stationery paper like the address labels but I had to remind her the school handbook has a portion for excuse letters :D

Well, she hasn’t been to school for third day in a row and she has become restless. She keeps herself busy by drawing pictures, answering new workbooks, watching films and reading her new book.

Hope she would be well enough to go back to school tomorrow :)

We saw each other last night. After _ _ years. Sorry friends I had to blur your pretty faces to protect your privacy.

Alternating between laughter and chitchat, we went on and on and on. We should have set the time earlier. Next time we will.

friends

Half of the group that met last night. There were eight of us last night. The ninth one wasn’t able to make it. We still have to find two friends from our group though.

Save for a few white strands, a few pounds gained, husbands’ names attached to our names, children who make us proud, work that keep us busy, a few tricks learned along the way (like the tip about how to make acne home remedies to save on cosmetics and sound financial advice on things that are on sale) we became wiser and more mature but nonetheless fun. I must say we are still the same when we met in college.

Walang kokontra please :D

I am one of those people with skin that does not really need tanning lotions like some of my friends do. In other words, maitim ako*! LOL.

When we had our brief beach adventure three months ago, my already brown skin turned more brown even with the use of sun block. But I don’t really mind.

Women these days are so obsessed with having a lighter skin tone that they use whitening products which at times, cause more harm than good. With the lot of us who have brown skin, having a fairer skin is perceived as more beautiful while those with fair complexion take to sunning themselves to have a tan.

Can’t have it both ways.

*maitim ako means I have brown skin

A few days from now will be Ondoy‘s one year anniversary.

I definitely do not want to revisit the horror and get acne breakout by having a lot of sleepless nights. Of course, the memories are still there which makes me in a panic mode whenever it rains hard and the children are still in school or are en-route towards home. I have noticed, and so have others, that a mere 30 minutes heavy downpour makes the streets not passable when otherwise these weren’t the case.

I often wonder about the people whose lives were severely affected by that tragic day. I remember talking to a fellow homeschooling mom whose family abandoned their new home because it still had floodwater IN it after a few weeks. The horror!

I really hope the lessons learned will be a guide to being better persons, with ot without a tragedy like that.
