Shelved under Bits and Pieces, In the News

A lot has been said about climate change. Terms like greenhouse gases, chloroflourocarbon, ozone hole, El Nino and La Nina phenomenon, flood, drought and stronger hurricanes are some of the words that came up. These are real. We have stronger typhoons which bring about landslides, flooding, and diseases. Severe drought bring about dry lands not suitable for farming, which in turn are not suitable for grazing animals. Glaciers are melting. The list goes on and on.

In Australia, farmers are desperate because of the drought they are experiencing. Even the global economy is at risk if appropriate actions are not done immediately. The experts say the “Time is running out”. Click here to read why. Click here to be able to see more links about climate change and its effects.

November 1 is All Saints’ Day. It is one of the holy days of obligation in the Roman Catholic Church. This is the day when all saints (known or unknown) are remembered. This is also the day when Filipinos flock the cemeteries to visit their deceased loved ones, offering prayers, flowers and lighted candles.

November 2 is All Souls Day, which I believe is the day that people should do what they have done on the first. But because tradition has dictated that November 1 is the day people remember their deceased love ones, it has been declared not only as a holy day but a holiday as well.

November 13, 2006 (Monday) is World Kindness Day.
November 13-19, 2006 is World Kindness Week.
What is kindness? Kindness is the act or behavior of being charitable to others. It is considered as one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. It is mentioned countless times in the Bible. Click on the kindness word to know some quotes where the word kindness appears in the Bible.

For me, kindness comes in different forms and can be manifested in different ways. We may do acts of kindness in small or big ways but it is the sincerity and love that flows from our heart which are felt by people on the receiving end. Friendship, compassion, helpfulness and forbearance are facets of kindness.

Kindness begins at home. Seeds of kindness are sown in the home. Little acts of kindness done at home reflects on how we treat others outside the secure and loving confines of the home. These acts of kindness require no monetary rewards. People who do these acts of kindness feel happy and inspired. In fact, they glow, knowing that they did something for others that made them feel special. A smile, helping someone in need of help, contributing acts in taking care of the environment, listening to a friend, offering a shoulder to cry on, these are just a few acts of kindness we can offer.

Let us not wait for November 13 to do our act of kindness. What can you do today as your act of kindness?

My children are fond of playing PC games. Trixie started young, when she was two years old, she started playing PC games like Arthur’s Birthday and Arthur’s Teacher Troubles,Little Critter in Just Grandma and Me and Harry and the Haunted House. She enjoyed playing with these games for years along with other Sesame Street pc games. Now she enjoys playing The Sims Makin Magic.

Julian enjoys a variety of pc games himself. His all time favorite is the Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2. He also loves Need for Speed Underground 2. His current craze is 18 Wheels of Steel Across America. In these games, he continually challenges himself to break his records. Ask him about the cars’ names, he will readily give them to you. He could even give you the some stats like the fastest speed.
Tania also has her share of pc games like Blue’s Clues Reading Time, Dora the Explorer Backpack Adventure and Dora the Explorer Lost City Adventure.

It has been said time and again that frogs are good indicators of “trouble in paradise”, meaning ecological imbalance in the ecosystem. Why and how we ask. In fact, it is not just frogs, but other amphibians as well, like toads, newts and salamanders. Reports about them being extinct as well as being malformed has been circulating, meaning there are lots of negative effects in the environment. For one, they are considered very sensitive to pollution because they breathe through their skin. Click the title to know more about Frogs as Early Indicators of Global Disaster.

In Panama, they are doing a different approach to save their well-loved golden frogs. Click this Washington Post article to know what the biologists have been doing to save these frogs.

Reading is very important in the learning process.

Reading is very complicated. One has to start recognizing the letters of the alphabet. Then master the phonemic sounds of each letter. Phonemic awareness should also be mastered in the initial, medial and final sounds of words.

Combination of these phonemes are then started in C-V or V-C pairs. C-V means consonant-vowels like ba, ca, da. V-C means vowel consonants like ab, ad, ag. Then next would be combining these phonemes in C-V-C like cat, bag, hat. Alongside all these words mentioned above are illustrations that go with each lesson.

That is just the decoding part.
