Special Education can be one of the most rewarding areas of teaching. Special Ed students need significantly more help than the average student, and often appreciate it much more. Unfortunately, dealing with students who may have severe social, mental, and emotional problems every day can sometimes become quite frustrating. With that being said, I’ve come up with 3 tips for Special Education teachers to help keep calm when dealing with students who can sometimes be particularly frustrating.

1. Remember that they are Special Education students – While this might seem like a no-brainer, it can be very helpful if you actively keep it in mind when dealing with a stubborn, rude, or ungrateful student. While the average student may know what is and isn’t okay to say and do around a teacher, special education students may not. It’s your job to help teach your students proper ways to act, but you cannot approach it in the same way as average students, and therefore cannot expect the same of special education students as average students. While it can be quite upsetting if a student is constantly acting out, you must resist the urge to treat the student as you would someone without any mental deficiencies. Keeping this in mind can often give that extra patience needed to help the student learn the lesson the right way.

2. Take a step back and breathe – If a student is being particularly combative, refusing to work, or simply not getting the point after numerous attempts, it can be a good idea to just take a step back and breathe. Ask the student to continue to work on whatever it is, or ask an aid to come over and help while you cool off. Sometimes it can be difficult to maintain the patience and energy needed to help below-average students all day. Breathing calmly and removing yourself from the situations briefly can be just what your mind and body need to keep going. If you combine this with tip one, you should be feeling much better after a frustrating situation.

3. Take a break and work with another student – If a student is giving you problems, and you find yourself growing frustrated, you can always come back to helping that student later. If the student doesn’t want to cooperate and learn, and you are growing tired of trying, then simply tell them that you’re going to help another student, and that they can get you when they are ready. Of course you can always go back and try again after you are finished helping another student.

The biggest overall idea to take away is that patience is something special education teachers, and parents of students with special needs require a significant amount of. If you find that patience wearing thin, it’s perfectly okay to take a little break from the source of the frustration. Collect you’re thoughts, and when you’re ready, you can go back in and try again. Remembering that your students may have severe mental issues can help you keep things in perspective. Special Education teachers who succeed are the one’s who keep this in mind.

The date has been set and so was the place. But the traffic was a different story.

Instead of heading to the set time and place, we detoured.

But who cares? With excellent fun and bonding moments, we are getting even better with every dinner/EB we have.

Shoe paradise. Cookie (in brown) and Chateau (in aquamarine) bought a pair each of ballet shoes from one corner of the CMG shop.

We walked around looking for a place to eat, with our chatter trailing us until we reached Burgoo. We had another dinner at Burgoo a few months ago.

Chateau aka iMomOnLine, Cookie aka Scrooch Chronicles, Feng aka From Dawn till Dusk, Rowena aka The SweetLife-Rowena, me aka TeacherJulie and GreenBucks, Lynn aka TheMomZone and Avocado Express and Lady Cess aka Occupation: SAHM.

Food was served. Yummy food, all steaming hot and smelling great. Did the chatter stopp when the food came? No, we went on and on, talking about so many things, mainly about our kids, about things that interest us and sharing new things we have discovered.

After dinner, cups of decaf and ice cream cones settled down our tummies. The chatter went on and on. If it weren’t for the time, which was almost midnight, I am sure we would not stop. There are still so many topics to talk about like gardening, home and bathroom fixtures perhaps, time management tips from Lynn, door designs from Chateau, traveling to Palawan with Cookie (huh?), setting up a laundry shop like Wenchie’s, tech know-how and blogging tips from Cess, setting up a good business from Feng, and teaching tips from me.

Maybe a group project where we can do something for others and for ourselves should be planned too. Who knows, that might materialized soon. For now, we are probably planning to have another EB soon. Any suggestions, ladies?

Here is my Sunday market adventure.

You won the raffle for the The Alps ticket for two at the SM Imax Theater on August 4 at 5:30PM

That was a part of the email I got from Noemi. Now this got me very excited for two reasons.

First reason would be because this is the first time I have actually won in a raffle! Yeah, pathetic it may seem.

Oh, I did win some packs of soup during a Taste Asia blog event last year. Not that I really won but they had so many things to give away, I just had to be given one.

And there was this shirt raffled off during the iBlog4 event. The shirt I got was the second to the last to be given away. How did my name surface? It was because the name called for that shirt left already so my name was called instead.

I don’t even win in cake raffles.

Not even when in one school that i used to teach, they had so many gifts to be raffled during the teachers’ Christmas Party. The other preschool teachers won big prizes like a television set, and an oven toaster. What did I get? A fruit cake inside a wonderfully and cheerfully decorated golden box.

To say that I do not even eat fruit cake should give a hint at how I felt during that time. No kidding.

Second reason for me to be excited is because I haven’t been to the SM Mall of Asia IMAX Theater. Yeah, poor me, who confesses to love watching movies.

We do love movies but since movie watching has become expensive these days and there are five of us who will watch, we just have to be content waiting for the DVD release. Its not just the movie tickets that we have to buy. There’s food, parking fee, gasoline and other stuff that the kids might ask from hubby or me. We could have paid for acne treatments for my eldest daughter with those expenses.

Even if we are the last persons on earth who haven’t watch a specific movie everyone except us is raving about. still we wait.

Of course, there are movies worth watching on the big screen so we just have to wait for the right movie if we have to watch our budget.

I can’t wait to watch The Alps on August 4, at the IMAX Theater in SM Mall of Asia.
