Yes, the numbers about Cervical Cancer are frightening.

One of the causes for cervical cancer is the chronic and persistent cancer-causing type of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection. HPV infection can lead to pre-malignant lesions which progresses to cancer.

Cervical cancer ranks second among cancer cases afflicting women. World Health Organization (WHO) estimated around 530,000 new cases and 280,000 deaths in 2008. Females aged 15 and above are considered at risk for cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle, screening and vaccination. Vaccines are made available to girls as young as 10 years old. These are given in three doses. Consult with ob-gyn for more information on the vaccination process.
