Spiral part of a vine called ampalaya in the vernacular, otherwise known as Bitter Gourd or Bitter Melon.

Spiral

Bitter gourd or bitter melon is not only a good additive to dishes but has a lot of medicinal benefits as well. These include being made into supplements for diabetics because it contains a lectin that has insulin-like activity.

That was a part of my vegetable garden last year. This year, I am starting over :)

Hmm.. is that the big or the small bitter gourd? If it’s the smaller ones… congrats.. they really help diabetics. :P

I didn’t know Filipinos eat bitter gourd too.

I usually stew them or cook them in soups. What recipes do you have?

Perfect solution for this challenge!! And it was to be found in your vegetable garden! Never heard of bitter gourd/melon before, but I am interested in the medical uses of plants.
I have been planning a series of my own “Tourist in my own town” and only had one thing in mind as soon as I read that this week’s theme was going to be “Spiral”. But I had no pictures and had to go out in the snow and cold to take some pics. Silly me, I caught a cold!
Happy weekend and stay healthy!

I love this image. I love the way the spiral has “fur” adorning it. I bet you’d enjoy my take too. . .
