Happy World Teachers’ Day to all the teachers :)

October 5 is World Teachers’ Day as per the signing in 1966 of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers.

Being a teacher does not just mean having a degree geared toward teaching (in the academe). Anyone can be a teacher though what is being taught can be debatable.

Anyway, for me, being a teacher is really fun, not minding all the hard work I put in what I do  especially since I am a special education teacher. We have to challenge ourselves to try something outside our comfort zone to be able to learn lessons that will enhance and enrich our experiences.

Of course, we should know how to have fun too :)

I get Valentine thoughts and wonderful messages. Of course it would be good to be the Teacher of the Year but being appreciated for all my hard work and dedication is good enough for me.

Teachers are like parents too and for those who are single, be prepared to teach life lessons to your students.

There are so many things to teach: reading, love of books, dealing with anger management and cutting classes, teaching behavior management, not keeping (bad) secrets from trusted adults, dealing with emotions, distinguishing good touch from bad touch, correct spelling, even sitting and arts and crafts.

These are just the tip of the iceberg of values, wisdom and knowledge a teacher can impart to the students.

Teachers are also compasses, guiding their students to the right direction and teaching them no matter what, life is beautiful.

Of course, there would be people who will not be happy with you like this one or this or even this. When parents like these are encountered, just be professional so they will not trample down on you just because you are a teacher. Gah.

This was what I have written three and a half year ago:

No words can express the sadness over the loss of lives and devastation that our country went through a few days ago when typhoon Ondoy or Ketsana battered the country. Times like these, we have to turn to the WORD, my other entry, to calm us.

See some videos here.

Now we are preparing for yet another super typhoon, Parma, said to be a category 5. Watch it here.

I am reposting a photo from one of my posts after the Ondoy/Ketsana:

There, a wave formed in front of our house which got bigger when the current got stronger and faster as the night slowly came upon us. It was one of the longest night ever for me and my family.

We thank God we were spared when others had it worse or maybe worst.

Have a great weekend y’all and please, offer a prayer for us Filipinos so we can survive Parma.

UPDATE 7:30am: Parma/Pepeng has changed course (we here at MegaManila do not have typhoon signal as of this writing) although the Northern part of the country is still being beaten down.

As the country readies for another super typhoon, the country has been declared as under a state of calamity.

I am skeptical whether this actually mean we can expect goods to be sold at their current level since there have been a lot of instances regarding hoarding of dry goods as people go about in their panic buying mode.

Everything from noodles, canned goods, bottled water and juices, bread and other provisions (maybe even the best weight loss pills) with several days of shelf life are going, going, gone in a span of days from the supermarket shelves.

Pondering on the thought that people have been going overboard with their consumables and spending habits, perhaps it is time to focus on the essential aspects of our lives that can’t be bought by money: giving importance to others and not forgetting to say thanks to the Lord (who is not a vengeful God by the way) if one has been safe from ordeals others went through.

Yes, I know, we can’t possibly survive with just love and being together but that is another story.

A mom blogger friend and I were virtually chatting last night and she was just thankful that her family is safe. No amount of money can top having your loved ones safe. And yes, despite their cars (one that is just a couple months old) submerged, their home underwater, and things they own got wet and some destroyed, she is thankful her family is together throughout the ordeal.

Isn’t that one of the most important things we have to cherish during this time?

Panic buying is rampant now that there is another super typhoon just days after one has devastated the country.

I was supposed to go a nearby supermarket to get some additional provisions on top of what hubby got last night but I changed my mind.

The mom of a student just came there and said people are in a panic to get their hands on the grocery items. Carts and baskets are being waited upon to be emptied at the cashiers’ posts. Hoarding, yes probably, but we can’t blame them.

I am sure barcode scanner technicians are on a standby just in case something wrong happens as the cashiers ring away the times to be bought to avoid any further inconveniences.

I decided to try it out at a small store that we frequent on our way home. No lines to speak of although the items on sale are very limited but I don’t really mind as long as we have the important items we need to survive a typhoon for a day or two.I hope.

As for me, I can only panic without the buying. Heh.
