Protection is the theme for Photo Hunter this Saturday.

Here is some sort of protection in our home front, my other PH entry.

This is the altar of the Basilica Minore de San Sebastian which was one of the highlights of our family’s annual Visita Iglesia during the Holy Week. This church is of Gothic architecture with 52 tons of prefabricated steel from Belgium shipped to the country for the construction of the said church.

The Philippines is a Catholic country, the only one is Asia, due to the Spanish influences when the country was colonized for more than three hundred years.

People seek protection and “favors” from patron saints.

Protection means wearing saint medals as pendants and/or putting prayer booklets in the wallets.

Church traditions are still observed though not as fervently and fanatical as before because more and more Christian churches (born-again Christians) are established.

Ironic too, FOR ME that even if people believe in the intercession of the saints and in prayers, they seek protection from supernatural beings and mythical creatures. This probably stems from the ritualistic and indigenous beliefs and practices back when the early Filipinos pre-Spanish conquest believed in such.

Sometimes people have contradicting beliefs, kakatawa. Especially the older generations.

I always love the intricate designs of old churches.

The Cubans do that too, with their Santeria religion – a combination of Catholicism, voodoo, animal sacrifices to spirits – the whole bit. They don’t see any conflict between all those practices, either. Good post for the theme, Julie!

Hope you’ll stop by mine!

I wondered when I’d see the first religious-themed entry of this week… now I have — and am a bit surprised it wasn’t the iconic St. Christopher’s medal. ;)

Great post, I love the history. I think I will have to set aside some time and study the history of the Philippines– you’ve made me curious!

I’m a little late with my PH this week; I’m catching up after a busy weekend. :)

I’ve always love the unique architecture of churches in the Philippines. Too bad I didn’t have much time to visit and take photos of them.

Great take on the theme. The fusion of religion with supernatural beliefs prove intriguing to many people.

I wasn’t able to participate. I’ll make it up on the next one.
