Learning by Doing.

That is the philosophy in my daughter’s elementary school under a university that has been around for 90 years now.

Today, she will have her grade 7 graduation ceremony. She could easily have been a high school student last school year, having passed the high school entrance test, but we chose to have her enrolled in grade 7, never mind if some of her friends moved on to that level and never mind if we have another year of school expenses.

Today is the day we all look forward to, the graduation ceremonies which is a sort of closure for her and for my husband and I as well, for there would have been none if she went to high school. I look forward to listening to the speech that she has prepared as a part of the ceremonies later on.

Today, we look all forward and we know that there is no turning back.

My husband and I and her mentors too, have been her guide during her growing up years and now we take the sidelines and coach her, listen to her, encourage her, cheer her up and give her tips whenever she needs these.

I know it is difficult to let go of the fact that she is growing up fast and may be starting to weigh her options and do things geared toward a career of her choice in the not-so-distant future.

I know that I have complained not just once but a few times about the changes in behavior that she is going through. When I think about it, this is a phase where I can test not just my patience and understanding as mother but I know I will learn more and grow more as a person.

To my lovely daughter, we love you so much and we wish you all the best :)

Learning by doing is well known principle of teaching by John Dewey. Fortunately, our educational system spend more on theory than practice.
