Decorating the Christmas tree is a fun though tiring activity. I knew of several households who even hire their own interior designer for the holidays so that their homes would look magical.

My brother-in-law is an interior designer by profession. He works with one of the top interior designers here in the country. They have done lavish homes, hospitals, restaurants and resorts.

He is quite good, and has an eye for detail. He knows the latest trends from the wall colors to the bathroom fixtures to the coolest finds and where to get these.

Anyway, I am now writing a post to share some tips I got from him about decorating one’s Christmas tree:

The tree should be placed in a part of the house where everyone can see it. This should also the the “perfect” place to have the lights reflected in other parts of the house. Say for example, near mirrors. They had their tree over at my MIL’s house at a corner near the piano, where it stands almost every year.

The tree should have a base, like a cloth or it may even be out on a table with short legs (read: something like Japanese tables).

When decorating, put the LIGHTS FIRST, distributing these evenly in the inner portion of the tree.

Why? To create the effect you like, to be able to place the ornaments properly where these can be highlighted by the lights and to give the tree some “depth”.

Start decorating from the top, spacing the ornaments as evenly as possible.

Hang the ornaments last. For bigger ornaments, these can be placed first then put the smaller ones next to fill the spaces in between. There are no rules as to what can be put on the trees, small toys, handmade Christmas ornaments and whatever one fancies.

As extra, bring out those Christmas-themed things like pillow cases, rugs, curtains and table-top ornaments to make the house more festive. As with other things, do not overdo.
