MegaMom tagged me last year (gasp! was it that long already?!) to answer the question, “To Cane or Not to Cane?

My response:

We do not really use the cane. I have one which I bought years ago, when it was only Trixie and the two younger ones weren’t born yet, but I rarely use it. On this piece of light wood, instructions are written on how this can be used. Here is a part of the wood:

I have forgotten about this until one day, my hubby insisted we move the bed a bit so he can get his puller which we use to pull out his white hair. And I saw that the wooden piece was there.

Of course, I got it and the children were eyeing the thing like it was some sort of a witch’s contraption. When they don’t wear their slippers, when they play rough and one or two cry, and when they just about annoy each other too much, I bring it out to show them and tell them I mean to use it on them, they keep quiet.

But times have passed and they have ignored my warnings. And when I couldn’t hold my patience while I’m grinding my teeth to its roots, I thought of something new. I found a new weapon. The digicam. How? I tell them I will take their photos or even videos and I will put these in my blog or even YouTube for all the world to see. They stop. Tee hee :D

Now, Mitch, Bang, Cookie, Chateau and Cess, its your turn to answer: To Cane or Not to Cane?

OMG, Julie, I forgot about it na nga… heeheehee, I hope you weren’t too pressured to complete it. Thanks for your sharing your thoughts on this, they are appreciated. :)
After this post, I was in Singapore, and funny, of all things, Caning came up in conversation between me and my cab driver there. Caning as you know is part of the armamentarium of their penal code. According to him, “that is the price we Singaporeans pay for progress.” I thought about it in the context of my own family and decided that maybe it’s not too bad to be “backward” after all.

  • For all its worth, IMHO, there are some who needs a little bit or maybe some of these to knock up some sense into them :D  I think having this as a ground to tell the authorities as an abuse by the parents is one excuse to have what the child(ren) wants that the parents refuses. They can use this as blackmail. Scary thought.

There are “pamalo” for sale?? Due to our culture kaya ang commercialisation nyan?

Anyhow, I’m finding myself becoming sterner to Kelvin these days. Talaga naman teacher Julie, my patience runneth over sometimes. Last night for the first time, dinapa ko sya at pinalo ko talaga sa pwet nang kamay ko. I felt really bad afterwards but I explained to him why.

There’s really no such thing as terrible-two’s. talagang terrible-three’s po ang totoo.

  • Auee, wait till he turns 7 or 10 or 12 or when he is a teener. Got this from a Tahanang Walang Hagdan kiosk. IMHO, some needs to get some close encounter with this thing to learn a lesson or two ;)

There are a few dads and moms I would like to give that cane to — with inscription. Can you hmmm mass produce it, TJ? Will place an order outright. :)

  • Ahhh, I can definitely agree with you there, AM. Hah, to whom will you give that to? We would need a lot, to make these for those who deserve some close encounter. Hay, ang saya why didn’t i think about this for the parents and not for the kids since they are the adults and should have been more senible, if not responsible :D
