It has been written that China’s arable land is only 13% of its total land area. This was back in 2005. The major reason cited for this is the following: growing urban communities, sprawling cities, urban centers booming, with farm lands, with the very few arable lands being taken up for construction purposes.
And now, some grim news. What little arable land/farm lands are, these are in drought with shrunken crops, dried wells and lost land and homes. The reason? Water is being pumped from there to make Beijing look wonderful for the coming Olympics in August.
Say that again? The water that will be used to make Beijing look lush would come from nearby provinces pumped from underground sources. Its not just the water that is lost, but the land as well. Sad.
