‘Tis the season of giving, so they say. ‘Tis the season too to go bargain hunting, if one wants to scrimp save on gifts to give. Before going on these bargain hunting adventures, it is best that one is prepared for the worst and the unexpected. So how would one psyche the mind and prepare the body for this? Here are some tips:

  • Wear comfortable footwear. You got a lot of mileage to cover so you wouldn’t want to have blisters on your feet.
  • Wear comfortable clothes. If you are going to an outdoor market, a light jacket that will protect you from drizzles or from the cold would be helpful. You wouldn’t want to miss important Christmas food galore gathering because you got sick.
  • Bring small bills. How can you ask for discounts when your bills are large?
  • Use a belt bag if you have one and avoid carrying your billfold for anyone to snatch. That is definitely bad news.
  • Bring big sturdy plastic bags to put your loot. Or bring a stroller for easy carrying. Buying these would mean extra costs to you which can be used to buy some small items.
  • Much as you love your children and want to spend time with them, leave them at home. This is common sense really, you don’t want them get hurt if there’s a commotion nor worse, get lost amidst the crowd.
  • Eat before you go. Need I say more?
  • Scrutinize the goods before paying. You wouldn’t want to give your meddling aunt a cracked vase.
  • Count your change before you go.
  • Haggle, haggle, haggle. But do it nicely because the salesperson would probably not give you the discount if you do it arrogantly.
  • Prepare a list of persons you will give items to.
  • Stick to your budget.

I hope I have covered the basics. Yes, these are just the basics. Would there be more?

those tips will come in handy this season. many of us usually forget such important details when christmas shopping that we en up being duped, robbed or buying something useless in the end.

I carry a big disadvantage when shopping though. I can’t haggle. Nahihiya ako tumawad, most guys usually do. so sometimes I ask my cousin cielo to accompany me. she’s a ‘terror’ in this aspect. he he.

  • I used to be shy to haggle but now, kapalmuks na ako, hehehe…Plus before I don’t inspect the goods thoroughly and now I do. And I have become wary of items that smell like plastic which is usually Made in C41%@.

These are great tips Julie. I will keep them mind if I go to any tiangge where the bargains are good.

  • Thanks, Rachel though very late, I haven’t been to any tiangge lately. Been too busy and wary of products that can be dangerous especially those Made in C**** :)

great tips. I guess the last two should be observed all the time.

  • Thanks, myepinoy. Yes, the list and the budget. Sometimes I equate the budget with the “position” in my life of the person I’m giving a gift to. My bad :)

hi teacher julie, these are great tips. sana meron kaming ganito kalawak na lugar na mapuntahan. hahaha…this is great to do at tutuban, baclaran, or prathunam in bangkok, and mogkok ni HK.

  • Thanks, Arlene. We love going to Tutuban for a night shopping but those items being sold seem to be dangerous so I don’t think we will go there this year.

I love your tips for holiday shopping. The one about leaving children at home is great. I seem to always see crying, tired children when I’m holiday shopping. They would be much happier at home with another parent. Have a great week!

  • So true, they are probably much happier at home. Plus, a promise of an anticipated surprise gift would also be wonderful :)

Ako I have one tip…don’t wear any jewelry!! Did you hear about that incident in Divi where this lady’s ears were slashed when a snatcher pulled off her earrings? Maybe a watch lang just to keep track of time. Also para di ka mapagkamalang mayaman (kahit rich ka talaga)…hahaha :)

  • Ay, yeah, jewelry, juice ko po naman, baka super kinang ang earring ng babae, kawawa naman. Yeah, a watch. Ay, galing ng lola ko, napaghahalatang sanay sa pagshopping :) Sorry, Cookie but your grown-up Christmas wishes won’t probably be found in the tiangge. Kung meron man, japeyks :D

That eat before you go is a “must do” specially if you’re with the husband. Everybody gets cranky when the tummy grumbles

  • Ah yeah, kung puwede hubby stays at home kasi sometimes KJ, yun lang, walang tagabuhat. But then he would also be the person who will keep things in control, if ever :)

Hi Julie, when you go to a tiangge like in Greenhills, when you haggle, ask for 50% discount kagad. Then, from there, you haggle again. Stall owners in that area usually have a 100% marked up price on their goods (I had a store there before)…One tip pa, wear comfortable shoes.

  • 50%! Wow! But sometimes the tindera won’t say ok kasi yun daw ang bilin ng amo. Dapat siguro dun sa me mukhang amo bibili :D The comfortable shoes is number 1 ;) Thanks!

Great tips Teacher Julie. Yes, always eat before shopping, this applies to grocery shopping because you spend more money when you are hungry.
