Early childhood intervention is important for children with developmental delays or disorders. For (new) parents, it is not just important to have the latest trends in the birthing process and the latest trends in baby supplies that are given focus. Parents have to know, should know, the different developmental milestones their children will undergo. Why is this important? So that they are able to monitor the different developmental stages that their children would undergo in the process of growing up.

Knowledge and observation of these developmental milestones or lack thereof, would be able to help parents notice if there are any, developmental lags in their child. If there are, it is best to consult their pediatrician or a developmental pediatrician for advise. Early intervention is very crucial upon the detection of developmental delays in children.

How so? Early intervention would likely increase the probability of preventing any developmental problems that may arise later on. It can also reduce more educational costs to different school programs (but then, the family has to be ready for the costs of having these early intervention programs for the children). It can also improve the quality of the family relationship.

Denying what that there is/are underlying problems/s, whether easily observable or not, would not help the child.

Most of these are my opinions, please feel free to give pointers on what you think I missed.

Thanks Julie! Key to early intervention is early diagnosis, so you are right on to suggest that parents should know what milestones to look for.
Pedias should be able to advise them especially during the first year of life, re: what to expect in terms of all skills (language, motor, fine motor, social) at each visit. :)

  • This developmental milestones should be given emphasis, especially by new mothers, instead of giving emphasis more on the new trends in baby fashion and accessories, as well as the hip pre-birthing exercise classes.  Just my 2cents. Oh, and about the pedias, yes, they should be discussing these milestones with the parents.

thanks for this T. Julie. very helpful, as always. :)

that’s the very reason why I really insisted that we go to a devt pedia for Nico’s unusual delay in talking/communicating before.

  • Its not that we are “praning” but these developmental milestones should be given emphasis. It really helps a lot if parents, especially new parents like you are conscious about these things. By the way, more and more children are diagnosed with special needs, judging by the number of children coming to therapy centers.

[...] Of course, it is also good to know if the current school’s standards are not so “advanced” that these requirements are not what the grade level should be having. Some schools are like that so it is best to know the different developmental milestones of the child according to his/her age. Keeping records intact is also a big help. [...]
