Yup, the title said it all. Quite a mouthful really.

Wednesday we went to Trixie’s school for the Parents Orientation prior to the Confirmation Rites they will have on Monday, November 19, 2007. The priests (the chaplain and two assistant coordinators), all three of them were present. I was a bit surprised how this was so since the school is a non-sectarian school. Sure, the Catholics have their Religion subjects and those who are non-Catholics have a different class or maybe none for some.

We had meditative prayer after which the importance of confirmation rites was explained. As a non-Catholic myself, I can not relate. But as a non-Catholic who grew up learning all those traditions, prayers, Latin songs, and Catholic teachings, I can say I am more Catholic than the average and “authentic” Catholic person next to me. No, I don’t mean my husband.

I want to focus on the meditative prayer which was quite new to my husband, I know. Such is the way we pray in our church when I was still active and not married to a RC husband. We sit, silently we meditate, we talk to God with words coming from our hearts and we listen. Listen to what? To God, to His words, to His plans for us, through our prayers. Hard to believe and hard to accept especially to those who were born and raised in the traditional Catholic way of praying. But it is better, better than just mouthing memorized words in a prayer. Oral prayer, as what one of the fathers said.

I am glad for that opportunity to pray like we did last night. Some of the parents expressed their happiness too, because of the way the pre-Confirmation rites preparation is being handled, with the parents involved. And I thank God for that.

  • I am amazed at the “transformation” of the way the homilies are handles, Melai. The priests now are more dynamic. Of course, I know the difference, having been born and bred a Protestant but schooled in a RC school, trust me, I know. The RC are losing a lot of parishioners and if they don’t do something about this, mawawalan sila talaga ng tao. And I like the way you coined it: communicate with God. Thank you :)

I’m also non-Catholic and I agree with what you said about sincere, unique, and meditative prayers. And nowadays, when I do that kind of praying, I cry. hehe. Weirdo.

  • Joni, it is not weirdo. During that time that we were praying, I cried silently too just as I feel like crying now. I haven’t been able to pray like that with others for a long time. Thanks for sharing :)

meron na palang confirmation rites sa jasms. during my time it was only first holy communion for the catholics. that’s what i like about that school, you can exercise your faith without getting flak from anyone. i remember having muslim classmates who would lay their mats and face east and do their prayers in the afternoon. and they would attend religion class (catholic) just for additional information. wala namang pumipigil sa kanila. and wala talagang prejudice. love that school talaga :)

  • Cokkie, the Confirmation rites was special, we just had it today.Dr. Amelou Benitez-Reyes was there and she talked briefly about civic-mindedness, the basic Christian moral values, honesty and several other admirable traits that they hope the children will develop to be good leaders. Several higher-up in the PWU System were there. Grabe! I have the post here. Thanks :)
