Every Saturday, participants post photos based on a theme. The theme for this Saturday, November 3, 2007 is CLASSIC.

Classic can be interpreted in different ways. But in this post, I will be featuring photos of old things that have been “in-style” way, way back. Some are about the Philippine culture while some are of foreign origins.

Here are my classic photos depicting Philippine culture:

img_6380b.jpg

Classic home interiors made with native resources like capiz shells for windows and woven bamboo mats for ceilings. These are reminiscent of the time when the Spanish authorities colonized the Philippines starting from 1521 to 1898.

img_4748b.jpg

Classic mode of transportation. Those are my children and husband riding the calesa, or horse-drawn carriage reminiscent too of the Spanish colonization of the Philippines. Hubby did a little tweaking to have the sepia color on the photo.

img_1424b.jpg

A classic way to celebrate a modern-day wedding which was arranged in a classic way of match-making (courtesy of moi), riding in a horse-drawn carriage. Sorry Kim and Mitch I had to blur your faces I didn’t ask permission to put up your photo.

Now here are some classic finds that found its way to our country and captured on photos:

Julian in between a classic car and a modern car.

img_1308b.jpg

I found this photo in one of the cds where some of the 2005 photos are stored. This photo was taken by Emerald, hubby’s youngest sister when she was enrolled at the Philippine School of Interior Design.Had to do some tweaking here, yup, this went through several photoshop filters since there was no flash used and it was really dark. I don’t know what period this is, Victorian perhaps?

Some of the classic videos we have at home.

Have fun hunting for photos about anything classic. Who knows, we would be classified as classic in the near future, if not outdated or antiquated. :)

Hi julie, that’s a lot of really nice photos. We have the same concept on the classic car.

  • There are so many things that spell classic in our country by sad to day, these are not given much importance. Thanks for the visit, Mayi :)

Oh wow! I LOVE the dresses those girls were wearing in the tea party photo. Thanks for sharing such lovely snap shots. Have a great weekend!

  • Aren’t they lovely? I think they had these costumes rented. My SIL and her group mates did a Japanese dining room so she was not a part of this group. The original photo was so dark, the people are not seen well. Thanks for the visit, Tish :)

great entry on this week’s theme and nice way in showing off our culture. Kudos to you t. Julie. I rode a kalesa once at Tiendesitas and it’s fun

  • There are a lot of classic places, objects and even artifacts about the Philippine culture but sad to say these are not given attention. I did not ride the kalesa with my family in this visit, I opted to stay behind to take photos. They loved it though, especially the children. Thanks for the visit, JennyL :)

Hello Julie! I particularly love the first picture. The traditional Filipino interior which we do not see much these days.

  • That room is one of the featured rooms in the Bezo-Solana Resort in Batangas that we went to last August. Its owned by the Zobels and it features the best of Philippine handicrafts. Wonderful and truly inspiring. Thanks for the visit Lynn :)

Wonderful collection of classic photos. :) I enjoyed seeing the classic home interior. Fabulous choices for this week’s Hunt. :)

My classic photo.

  • Had to look for some in the cd files, LOL. Yup, proudly Philippine-made, that is the concept in that resort that we went to. Though the owners are one of the richest Spanish-blood descendants, the style was rather inspiring. Thanks for the visit DH :)

That’s a wonderful classic collection! I really love the bedroom in the first photo. :)

  • Thanks, Sabine. The bedroom showcases Philippine-made products which are classic in design. In fact, the whole resort and its furnitures are made here. Nice boost to the country’s wonderful products. Thanks for the visit :)

  • Let’s go watch a movie then, Pelfy, LOL! We do enjoy watching these, sometimes even those B&W classic shows. Thanks for the visit :)

3 Nov, 2007 @ 8:26 pm

Ooo… lotsa classics here! I love the picture Emerald took. They were dressed in those clothes? hmmmm…. I would love to pose for such a cool picture. hehehe….

  • Oh, ECL, you know why I included that, even if we had to adjust the color (since the original photo was dark)?  I would love to wear something like that too, LOL! Emerald’s group had Japanese as their theme, nice too but these costumes are more to my liking! Now, pass that press powder and mirror please ;)

Excellent photos, and very interesting. I especially love the picture of the calesa. The sepia look gives it an antique feel.

  • Have you ever tried riding in a horse-drawn carriage? Its almost the same, except the calesa is more like,  provincial or rural. Thanks for the visit,  A :)

Come visit me!

  • Hi Mary, welcome to my blog. Glad to know another teacher in the blogosphere. Thanks for the visit :)

3 Nov, 2007 @ 9:56 pm

Love all the takes on “classic” there. It would be interesting to see what is regarded as classic from our era in the future.

  • I am really thinking about what would be considered as classic a few years or decades from now. Hard to know for sure since things are changing so fast. Thanks for the visit Barbara :)

The first photo is so beautiful. The Zobels, Ayalas, Zubiris et al are so lucky to have enough money to pull off a look like that :)

  • Ah, even if the beach is not that good compared to others (for diving enthusiasts it is a heaven), the facilities are really great, all Philippine made. This resort was re-decorated for just a month, I could not imagine how much was spent for it. You’re so right, they are indeed “lucky”. Please check the link to see how it looks like. Thanks, BM :)

Those are great photos Julie. Wonderful interpretations of classic. I love Julian’s shot between the classic and modern car.

  • Thanks, Rachel. That was when Julian was a ring bearer in a wedding at Fernwood Gardens two years ago. The couple, Kim and Mitch did not ride any of these, they rode in the calesa, one of the other photos in my entry :)

4 Nov, 2007 @ 10:18 am

I loved the contrast between the old and new classic car.

  • The place where the old and new cars is the same place as the wedding photo. The newly wed couple opted to ride in another classic way, the horse-drawn carriage which is one of the photos in my entries. My son Julian was a part of the wedding entourage. Thanks Colin :)

I love your classics! specially what is classic of your country, just lovely!

  • There is so much to feature about our country but sad to say, some the things considered as classic are being neglected. Some of these are only made as features, not really symbolic or historically significant. Thanks, Mar  :)

wow..that’s a lot of classics!

you really took the time to look for them. I just couldn’t!

And..i’m so glad to see that someone else in another part of the world was bz cleaning up! I too was clearing up books/stuff…. but I didn’t have someone to cook for me. You’re real lucky! ;-)

  • Mott, you made me laugh :D I would love to experience living during the past where life is simple. Cleaning up is very therapeutic and I hope I get to do it more often because the house is begging for it. Thanks, Mott :)

These pictures are priceless. Bravo, Teacher Julie!

The karetela and tilburin evoke nostalgia.

Tama ka, there are many definitions of classic. Scrabble (like chess) for example, is considered classic because no scrabble game is the same as another. Ayan, naisingit din ang scrabble. hehehe

  • Wait, AM, will look at that word tilburin first…Ahahaha! It is that wedding’s horse-drawn carriage! Tilburin, wow, that in itself a classic word, first time to encounter it. Scrabble, I do not know how to play scrabble. Seriously.
