I have been blogging for a year in this domain and I would say that blogging helped me a lot. Not only did I gain new friends, learn a lot from reading other people’s points of views and even learned lessons from the different issues circulating in the blogosphere. I still am in the process of learning and even if I have had a lot of posts, I am still grappling the technicalities and terms concerning this so-called new media publishing.

Yes, blogging has brought me some monetary benefits too, since I do sponsored posts. To be able to not veer away too much from my niche which is basically special education, I try to choose topics that won’t jeopardize my blog’s unique content. I know some readers get turned-off when there are a lot of sponsored posts like the one below this so I try to come up with topics that would still make my friends come back. After all, even if not all my unique contents are not read or displayed, these are indexed in my archives for everyone’s reading pleasure.

Wow, what a lengthy introduction. Actually, the main topic of this post is to write about how I was offered to provide and write content in a blog about special education. When this was first brought to my attention last July, I was very ecstatic because I would be given monetary compensation writing about things that I am currently involved with. Days turned to weeks and weeks turned to months until I got confirmation that the contract is ready and this was sent two weeks ago.

I was still excited though not that much. Why? That day I read the contract in my Outlook, I just renewed my webhosting package and this signified that I can have several subdomains apart from my daughter Trixie’s personal blog which she is the writer but of course, I have to supervise too and Julian’s homeschooling blog which is about our homeschooling lessons and learning adventures.

The question my husband asked me: Would I be able to handle everything?

Writing quality content for this blog that will pay me a monthly fee where I am obligated to write daily posts as stated in the contract. Would I still have the time to write in my personal blog and Kuya’s homeschooling blog? Not to mention I work from Mondays to Saturdays, do homeschooling, write evaluation and progress reports for my students and do household chores like taking care of the children’s needs, cooking and cleaning the house (thank goodness for the laundromat, to Ate who can be asked to wash the dishes and to “Manang” Salve who I pay to clean the backyard every week).

Just today, I was able to write several posts and I have several others in my drafts, ready to be posted, and several others lined up because these are time stamped. The two younger children are with my parents for a vacation and I don’t have teaching schedule lined up since it is semestral break, so I am taking advantage of the free time to write and write and write.

I ask that myself too: How much is too much?

I can relate with you teacher Julie. Blogging is a meaningful activity for moms. Compared to me, I would say you can manage the activities you listed above and even more: prioritizing, delegating and learning to say “no” (which I wish I could consistently do) — you are a much younger mom than I am.

I wish I can learn to write and earn like you in less than a year’s time also. I am finding my way through blogging by myself since my kids are too busy to teach me how to.

Thanks for suggesting a name for our barber shop to be. I will let you know what I called it when we’ve finally made up our mind as a family. I am still looking for male and experienced barbers till now.

  • Try withdrawing some privileges so that they would try to find time to teach you, :D I wish you the best in your new business adventure. And I hope we can “bump” into each other personally, not just virtually,  since I think we live somewhat near each other. Thanks po for the visit. :)

Just reading about your writing obligations and your work schedule made me dizzy. But if you enjoy writing and it still feels fun, plus you earn some extra cash, good for you :)

  • Yes, I do have a lot of things to do. Good thing that the children are cooperative in some ways that I am able to do these things. Writing gives me joy and if I get some extra cash, it feels even better. Truth is, that extra cash is very much welcome. To write just so I can “beat the deadline” of making good articles 5x a week that would be easy too since there is time stamping. But I feel this will sort of drain me, just writing for the money, for the deadline and according to what a contract has stipulated. My apologies for ranting. :)

wow julie i got tired just reading the things you have to do. but i don’t doubt one bit that you can do this. if it is something you enjoy writing about then i think you will always have the time and energy. good luck.

  • (My apologies, Mayi, this was the same reply I gave to Christianne, not that I am too lazy to make another one for you but I would basically be replying the same thing so there..) i also need to really work on a sked that wont steal away mommy time with my blogging time… am really trying but… the computer seems too inviting sometimes.

  • I know what you feel, Raq. My personal blogging sked usually is very early morning since I have to be up at around 5-5:30am for my daughter Trixie who has to leave at 6am. After which I am off to work at 10am. Thursday and Friday work skeds are not really too tight so I can blog hop during those days. If I am “inspired”, I do articles in advance and out some sponsored posts in between :D Hay, time-stamping is a wonderful thing.

you know what if you are enjoying what you are doing, go for it. pero if it is only a case of beating the deadline, hmm.. think about it.

  • I have decided about the writing contract Raq. I decided to decline. I can’t do too much at the same time, don’t want to stress myself out by spreading myself too thin and suffer repercussions in the end. If I consider the monetary aspect, sayang din but then again, it is not just that. I may not enjoy writing if that’s the only reason. Plus I have other plans which would make me extremely busy that’s why I took advantage of the sembreak with the kids in my parents’ house vacationing, I did a week’s worth of time stamped articles. Will just update now and then plus put some posts with honorarium in between, LOL! By the way, I have another in mind for you. Thanks for the advise, greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

Julie, I have no doubt that you can handle it. But if it stops to be fun, then that’s the time you can pause and ask yourself if it’s worth it. I think that will be the best way to gauge whether or not “it’s too much”.
Whatever you decide, I’m rooting for you. ;)

  • Thanks, Mary. I decided to decline though even if it was hard for me to do so. I passed up an opportunity for me to earn and learn. Learn because this would mean I have to be more thorough with the posts I would be making plus this sure is going to be a “plus” points or “ganda points” for me as far as my credentials as a teacher is concerned. But then again, I agree with you completely, if it stops to be fun, it ain’t fun anymore. Thank you so much for the support, very much appreciated. :)

writing should not at all be stressful, if it would be, either your posts will suffer or you’ll have writer’s block of some sort.

if the best thing decision was for you to turn it down, ok lang naman. I’m sure there are still more opportunities waiting to be discovered. :)

  • Actually, parang nakakasawa na puro posts about special ed, joke. Its like I live and breathe this topic, but then, there are still many aspects that are interesting too. I have some other plans kasi, career-wise so it is best to not commit myself kesa naman I would have problems later. Thanks, Feng :)
