What have we been doing to Mother Nature?

People are slowly destroying what is natural, what has been God-given, and what was once beautiful? Would people be able to survive if tons of soil would descend on them when there are heavy rains or earthquake and tremors? Maybe not. What a disrespect for Mother Nature. People get what they want and in return, what they got would be given back to them, with a “vengeance”.

Or maybe yes. Yes, they will survive when there are no more mountains or hills to be washed away by the rains.

This is the Manila Zoo, located in the city of Manila, Philippines. We went there yesterday, September 23, 2007 to look at the animals and learn about them as part of my son Julian’s homeschooling Science subject about animals. He is partly hidden in the photo.

Every Saturday, member post photos based on a theme. The theme for this Saturday, September 22, 2007 is PAPER.

There are many ways to present paper. I have taken several photos of books in our collection, books that I use for teaching and display items made of paper such as lamps, small animals and other artworks but I decided to share something more personal today. And here are my paper photos below:

newspaper

Two of the few times my name appeared on paper, as in newspaper. These are two of the major spreadsheets in the Philippines.

The one on the right was when I got my name published along with tens of thousands of names for passing the Licensure Exams for Teachers.

The one on the left was about an article on Mothers who blog. This was written by Cathy Babao-Guballa. In the article are five other mothers who blog. They are Connie, Luisa, Annamanila, Lisa and Noemi. Most of them are with the e-zine called PinoyMomsNetwork that Connie created where I am a member/contributor/writer.

Scissors, Glue, and Concepts Drills. Click here for info about the book.

The boy above is RB, a student. The boy below is Kuya, my son. This was taken during their Social Language and Conversation dyad session. We just had “Listening to follow verbal instructions” drill and in the photos they are coloring in the pictures we used in the drill.

Parenting plays an important role in modifying or changing the behavior of children, particularly those that were diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD. Behavior modification is always one of the most important treatments for these children. Careful planning and successful behavior modification strategies are keys in helping improve the social skills, abilities to learn and abilities to adapt one’s self to the changes in the environment. These would also include reducing frustration, not just for the child but for the parents, teachers and caregivers as well.

STRUCTURED HOME ENVIRONMENT
Children diagnosed with ADHD work best in structured environment, whether at home or in school. To be able to establish a structured environment, there should be a predictable routine of activities. These can either be set up as a schedule, if possible with time stamp for every activity. If, however, there are any changes in the routine, the child should know about it in advance to prevent a stressful situation.

Established rules should be simple, clear and appropriate. These rules should apply at home, in school or even in places away from both. The application as well as remembering of rules can be done visually, because this is what works best for these children. Writing down a list of rules and responsibilities and posting these in appropriate places where the child can see often would help in establishing the proper behavioral guidance.

Alongside these rules, progress as well as accomplishment charts are also useful. These would enable to make the child see how he/she is performing as per goals set and agreed upon. These would also mean the anticipation of a reward, be it intrinsic or otherwise, upon the accomplishment of goals set for him/her. With these progress and accomplishment charts, focus on new target behaviors can also be started and improved upon later on.

Children diagnosed with ADHD have difficulties in organization. This means, they spend a lot of time looking for things that can’t be found or things that are misplaced. They spend a lot of time thinking how to start doing some tasks that they have a tendency to get tired even without starting a thing or two. One way to prevent such problems is by assigning specific locations of materials that are frequently used such as school things, clothes and toys. Posted reminders or even verbal reminders to put everything back where they belong after usage would be helpful. To those who can’t read well yet, illustrations would be very helpful.

The child has difficulty remembering what needs to be done? Have him/her repeat in proper sequence and if need be, practice. Your child is a part of the wedding entourage? Practice how to walk using the appropriate material. After all, practice makes perfect.

So how would the child knows how he/she is doing? Give immediate feedbacks and encouragement if difficulties were encountered in the learning process. These feedbacks and encouragements as well as rewards and consequences should be fair and consistent between parents or other family members, teachers and caregivers. The focus on positive behavior and rewards should be given more emphasis than the focus on negative behavior and their consequences.

Kuya, my 6yo has few but significant friends because he is homeschooling.

Two weeks ago, we went to my Mom’s friend’s house to get something which my mom sent for me. My mother’s friend is one that I have known before my mom (LOL!) because I have been a teacher in a preschool where their children were enrolled many moons ago. Said preschool was near where we live here. To say that the preschoolers then are in college now means it was that long ago. Their family went to live in Zambales so they were able to meet my mother.

Now, since they were not in their house when we came, we decided to have something to eat at the McDonald’s nearby. The children enjoyed that time because there was a party and they saw Ronald himself, well the mascot, that is.

We then proceeded to my friend’s house, Wenchie, who also lives in the same village as my mom’s friend. There my mom’s friend went to see me.

Needless to say, Kuya and Bunso enjoyed the brief stay we had at Wenchie’s house. My eldest daughter and hubby just stayed in the car. They played with the two younger children of Wenchie, Bea and Pio. Pio is also a homeschooling child and a car enthusiast like kuya himself. Two weeks from now, they are gonna see each other when we have our field trip to the Nestle Ice Cream Factory.

Yes, sometimes I work on Sundays, if the need is great. By need I mean my students have quarterly/periodical tests starting on a Monday so we need to meet to study for the tests. Tomorrow, Sunday, I have work in my other workplace. But this is unusual because I usually work weekends which includes Sundays in the workplace that I own/operate, my small tutorials room in my MIL’s place.

So why do I have to go today? The student has been referred for a Special Education Home Program by a developmental pediatrician. It is quite impossible for them to come to the center for sessions since they live far, up north in a province called Isabela. Isabela province is far, about 320+ kilometers from Metro Manila where we live.

So what am I supposed to do? Do an evaluation of the skills of the student to be able to make a Special Education Home Program suited to answer his/her learning needs.

Here is an old photo we took when we went to see the Magat Dam in Isabela two years ago for a Holy Week vacation:
