Every Saturday, members post photos based on a theme. The theme for this Saturday, September 15, 2007, is PLASTIC.

Plastic is an easy theme for me. In my country, the Philippines, plastic connotes people who are like Janus in the coin who showed a two-faced, well, face. This means people who are nice to you but say bad things about you behind your back. If I go by that theme, my post would probably be like a hate post so I wouldn’t. :P

Plastic is one of the leading and most common non biodegradable materials around us. So we should not just throw it everywhere we fancy. Like this:

img_6634b.jpg

That was a sad photo, a direct disrespect for Mother Nature. There is a saying that what goes around, comes around. So when rains come, expect places like these to have clogged drainage where mosquitoes breed which in turn brings about diseases.

On the other hand, plastic is useful and here are some examples of toys made of plastic in the therapy room where I teach where this supposedly happened:

img_6672b.jpg

A bucket of Lego bricks to enhance creativity and imagination as well as develop fine-motor dexterity.

img_6673b.jpg

A Fisher-Price toy for pounding.

img_6675b.jpg

Little People toys for pretend play and spontaneous speech production.

img_6683b.jpg

A card from the Super Duper Fun Deck Story Starters. These are laminated with plastic to be able to last.

img_6680b.jpg

Julian and Tania’s favorite toy blocks in my workplace with multiple shapes and colors. Very good to boost imaginative play.

Plastic on the ground… a similar picture can be seen in Spain as well, unfortunately.
Love your colorful choices for the theme. Lego brought back beautiful memories!
happy hunting!

  • In Spain? The Philippines was colonized by the Spaniards from 1521 till whereabouts 1898. Makes sense, :) Thanks, Mar.

In the U.S. plastic also has a similar meaning. It means fake or phony when used to describe people which kind of goes along with the two faced meaning you have in the Philippines. Good post and I like your variety of photos with everything from bad litter to educational toys.

  • LOL about plastic people, Carver. Thanks, :)

It is sad how much plastic gets thrown away in much of the world. Here in Munich, plastic bottles have a deposit on them, so they usually aren’t thrown away, and if you don’t bring your own bags to shop with, well, you usually have to buy a plastic bag!

All of those plastic toys look like a lot of fun. :) Very colourful too. Great photos!

  • We do waste segregation (cans, plastic bottles and styro together) in our household. Thanks, DH :)

What disturbs me are the trash trucks that we use in our country, with open ‘bin shoots’………you see plastic and trash flying out of the opening as the drivers make their way to the next stop, and trash/plastic all around us on the streets and in the yards!!!!

Great photos for the week.

  • I can relate to the open garbage trucks, Anni. When these are gone, the streets looked even dirtier than before they came, :D Thanks.

Wow. I liked your description of what plastic meant in the Philippines. Without being hateful you also gave us the two sides of plastic–the wonderful things we like and the nasty dump sites filled with it.

  • Yes, Cheysuli, plastic is helpful but can be dangerous when not used or disposed of properly. Thanks :)

Excellent post. It’s good to remember that plastic has enormous benefits if used and disposed of responsibly. Those toys, for instance, wouldn’t be so attractive or durable if made from anything else.

  • Yes, these plastic things can either be useful or dangerous depending upon the user. Colorful toys, yes, and attractive too. Let us just hope there not much too lead content :(   Thanks, A.

Hi Julie. I love the variety of photos you shared for this week’s theme.

I also don’t like “plastic” people.

It’s so sad, when people don’t realize the harm caused by plastic garbage to the environment as shown on the photo.

I love the fun and educational toys you featured. Yohan loves Little People. Sadly, they don’t show it on Cartoon Network anymore. He is also fond of Lego.

Thanks for visiting. Happy weekend!

  • So true about the dangers of plastic that’s why we do waste segregation in our household. Thanks Rachel :)

oh, this brings me back to when my kids were young. Both kids needed OT so I kept a lot of plastic stuff that snapped together. We also had a lot of synthetic furs and different textured fabrics (one of the twins has sensory integration disorder as a feature of her autism) So picking toys for a therapeutic room is very familiar to me!

  • Oh, Dorid, you must have had a lot of toys then. We do have a lot in the center. The owner/directress doesn’t buy the inexpensive ones, for these would not survive the wear and tear when used, :D

Yes in my country, people simply throw plastic away. Sad things to see.

  • I think this is a sad state in Asian countries, Che-Cheh. People should be educated about the proper us of plastic materials. Thanks, :)

LOL @ your post’s intro. I was thinking of going that way too. But, on second thought, I held my fingers. I wouldn’t want to be embroiled in unnecessary battles haha

So sad that people just don’t care and throw trash wherever. I hope we learn to be more conscientious.

My kids had that plastic pounding toy, but it’s broken now. They must have vented too much energy on the poor little toy LOL

  • Chateau, re your first comment. LOL! The pounding toy, a cause for many tears. The children love it they are fighting to get their hands on it. Maybe that why it is kept in my room now and not in the waiting area :D
