Just a while back my youngest daughter and I (the two older ones are vacationing with my parents in the province) were happily playing around, the TV turned on in the background. When my husband went out of the bedroom, I thought he was annoyed because we were noisy. But I was puzzled because it was noisy outside, there were lots of voices, of people talking and sounds of motorcycles as well as tricycles. It was unusual because it was already around 9:30pm. I got an sms from my neighbor, “Julie, may sunog sa Road 5. Wala ba kayo?” (Julie, a house is on fire over at Road 5? Are you not home?). Now, that is definitely heart-stopping because we live on Road 6. I quickly ran out the bedroom and looked for my husband. When I opened the kitchen door, I saw this.

DH Brian was outside. There were a lot of people on the streets, lining up, waiting for the fire trucks to arrive. I was starting to panic because I hear no sounds of sirens. Although it was obvious to me that the fire was on the other side of Road5, which is along the river which means a lot, a whole lotta shanties have been built there not from our block, still it was giving me an unsettling feeling. I quickly went back inside the house, called up the Police Hotline. Operator said they have already been contacted and help was on the way. I put Tania back in the bedroom after she asked to look outside the door and told her to stay put. I went to look for my husband who was with the throng of people. Hmm… this has been turned into a circus, there couldn’t have been this many people living where we are. Its like a fiesta out there! Anyway, after a few minutes, sirens can be heard from a distance. The people started to move away from the streets. Whatdayyaknow, all the fire trucks I saw were mostly volunteer firetrucks! Some even came as far away as Divisoria!

This was when I went to look for hubby and managed to glimpse the burning house, after an explosion was heard. Can you see the silhouette of people’s heads?

This was a volunteer group fire truck about to pass our house to go to the other end of the street where the fire was.
I am so relieved that the fire didn’t get worse. Now, everything is very quiet. I just hope and pray no one got hurt in the fire.

I’m glad your block wasn’t affected. Must be nerve wracking for you. I hope no one’s hurt.

  • It was nerve-wracking. My daughter was quite scared and the first thing she asked in the morning was if the fire has been put out. Then she added how come she wasn’t allowed to look outside? I asked her why and she said, “Gusto ko makita ano tsura ng firemen eh.” (I would have wanted to see how the firemen looked) LOL! :D

I remember what old folks (omg i am one now) used to say: “its better to be burglarized a hundred times than be a victim of a fire.” I can imagine how scared you were .. but not too scared to forget to take pictures. :)

I hope the damage not too bad and most of all that nobody got hurt.

  • Yes, I was scared but since it was at the other side of the other block, I thought I’d take a few snaps even if these came out fuzzy. The fire was in the early morning news as well as the early evening and late night news at abs-cbn last Monday.

That’s scary! We live in a condo in a townhouse. In the summer of 2002, the condos upstairs were on fire. Eeeeek! Scared the crap out of me!! Though we had no fire damage, we were out of our place for two months because of the water damage.

  • Teena, we sometimes think about living in a building but one of the concerns is about fires and also earthquake. Take care.

Grabe, thank God naapula agad ang apoy, teacher! Taga Road 5 ka pala. Marami nga dyan sa malapit sa inyo ang mga squatters, teach. Ano raw ang pinagmulan ng sunog?

  • Electric fan, according to the TV news. Hay, you know how it is with shanties, just a small spark will ignite the whole community right away. After I took the photos, I was already thinking about what we would bring with us just in case it gets bigger. Fire was on Road 5, we are on Road 6, :)

Oh my, that must have been such a terrifying sight. The fire seems so close and I’m glad that it was put out before it got worse. I also hope no one got hurt in that fire.

  • It was close, just at the other side of the street where we live. Shanties have mushroomed because is a river there. At the start of this year there was another fire at the next subdivision but that one was bigger, with burning things brought by the wind coming to where we live. I thought during this second fire, “Oh my, this second fire is getting nearer to where we are.”  :(
