Shelved under Bits and Pieces, My Thoughts

I often ponder about the Philippine educational system and what would become of it because of the current trend of teachers going abroad to earn more. Sure, some of them have been teaching for decades so it is perhaps “safe” to say that they have contributed to the “molding of the minds and spirit” of the children. But this current “brain drain” has been given another name: “Brain hemorrhage”. Scary but true.

The number of teacher recruitment agencies have risen whereas a few years back, there were only a handful. Sure, its true that we always put our family first, making sure all the basic needs plus more are met. One of the primary reasons why these teachers opt to work abroad. But even if that is done, even if their children go to the best schools around, what could they learn if the best teachers are not there anymore?

You have a point. Teachers break their backs abroad so they can send their children to better schools here. But who would teach their children here when everyone is doing an exodus? That is the irony of it.

and each year, teachers get younger and younger…the experienced ones leaving for abroad where they earn more. because no matter what they do here, it seems like they will not be able to get even at least their decent pay. so sad…

I would be a hypocrite if I don’t come out and say I too, have applied to 2 or 3 agencies. But it seems that I haven’t found my “luck” yet. I am not teaching in a school setting because my line of work is mostly one-on-one and small group intervention so I don’t feel guilty if I live. Hmm…am I justifying my career move, if ever I go abroad too? One of the reasons why I too want to earn more is so that I would be able to have my own “vocational school for special needs children” in the near future. I can’t be teaching one-on-one intervention programs forever and these children won’t be children forever so I figured I too have to grow with them, and help them find their niche in this society of ours. I just hope my dreams are not too big for me.
