-Christianne, you know how it is in the Philippines, some people consider it outrageous to be spending too much on parties when there is too much poverty around. It is a status symbol to do so though there are more and more families who do this. If one can afford it, why not? But to spend what one can't afford, it is impractical. Children can be too demanding at times, having experienced attending extravagant parties, they too would like to spend theirs as such and parents sometimes give in to their wishes, because after all, it is their child's special day. As for weddings, one only gets married once (let's hope thats the case) so it is one's choice to go all out. Make sure, it is marriage one is celebrating, not just a wedding ceremony

-connie, thanks. Hmmm... you think it would be profitable to go into this business? hehehe...

I threw one of those parties (magic show, games, loot bags) for my daughter when we went home to Pinas for the holidays and to celebrate her first birthday. For some of my relatives and friends, it was their first time to see her. The expense was worth it because children and adults all had fun. People mingled naman during the breaks in the program. And I didn't see a single kid playing with a Gameboy like they usually do during family reunions and parties without programs.

"Not to mention that this trend will certainly breed jealousy and the feeling that parents (and their children as well) must outdo the other families to prove that they are better parents."
Hmm, I've been to some bongga children's parties but never felt like the more you spend, the better parent you are, and I don't know anybody who feels that way. Just as I don't feel like having a fancy wedding costing millions of pesos makes you any more married than a civil ceremony. Just my $0.02 :)
